[1] History of competitive racing [ edit] The 1st downhill time-trial race took place in Fairfax, California on October 21, 1976 on a fireroad now referred to as Repack Road, 2] 3] 4] due to the need to repack the hub brake after each descent. [5] The bikes used were based on cruiser bicycles that had a drum or coaster brake that worked by pedalling backwards. The mechanism operated with a conical brake shoe being wound on a thread in a metal hub. To prevent the brake from seizing it was kept filled with grease. Its inciting incident is still that now internet-famous failure of nerve—the moment when a well-off businessman, here Pete (Ferrell) instinctively sprints away from the billowy cloud of snow rapidly approaching the mountainside patio where hes having breakfast with his wife, Billie (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and their two preteen boys. The avalanche is a false alarm, an optical illusion of doom; all it really does is blow some flakes over the alarmed guests. But it certainly feels like a brush with death while its happening. And it casts a cloud of resentment and shame over the familys vacation in the Alps, as Pete stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the cowardice of his actions and Billie simmers with resentment at a man with no apparent protective instincts toward his wife and children. Sounds gut-busting, no? In Östlunds hands, it genuinely was; Force Majeure, for all the chilly remove of its filmmaking, found constant, inspired cringe comedy in its patriarchs crumbling self-image and pathological abnegation of responsibility. Downhill strains for laughs of a different sort, many of them pitched to the wheelhouse of its TV-trained stars. Faxon and Rash, who previously wrote and directed the throwback 80s summer comedy The Way, Way Back, play up the discrepancy between Pete and Billies buttoned-up American marriage and the blasé sexual liberation of their Swiss hosts, including Miranda Otto as an over-sharing, polyamorous hotel manager. Silicon Valley s Zach Woods is also on hand as Petes coworker, vacationing through Europe with his younger girlfriend (Zoe Chao) and dropping awkward asides during the scene where Billie finally addresses the elephant in the room. (Woods has been cast in the part occupied in Force Majeure by Kristofer Hivju of Game Of Thrones, who has a very funny cameo in Downhill. Photo: Searchlight Pictures If theres a real draw to this bastardized variation, its Louis-Dreyfus. She really taps into Billies frustration and disappointment, supplying what sporadic pathos the film achieves (as during her big monologue, when she replays the terror of the avalanche) but also grounding the wackier interludes in recognizable emotion. Its to Downhill s credit that it does try to imagine a life for Billie outside of her domestic discord—conceiving, for example, of a flirtation with infidelity colored by her own midlife anxiety. Ferrell, on the other hand, is miscast. Theres a certain appeal to seeing this frequently over-the-top performer dial down his bellowing tendencies; hes working in a mode here much closer to the change-of-pace melancholy of Everything Must Go than the exaggerated shtick of his star vehicles. But with the SNL alum in the role, Pete comes across like a dopey sitcom dad from the start—how far, you wonder, can he really fall in the estimations of his family? Downhill doesnt so much unbalance the gender roles of his marriage as nudge Pete toward the realization that he needs to be a more engaged father. Its a soupy conflict. Maybe its good that Downhill doesnt try to replicate Östlunds more withering farce. The film could have taken the easiest route of tracing over its predecessor entirely, offering a scene-for-scene facsimile à la the pilot of the American Office. But Force Majeure exists. Should one pretend it doesnt simply to give this less ambiguous remake, with its subtext-shattering speeches and blandly bright imagery, a fair shake? Do we really need a more reassuring version when the genuine article is readily available? Theres maybe one ideal audience for Downhill, and thats the folks who have never seen or maybe even heard of the much better film on which its based. But will they be distracted at how quickly the filmmakers were able to make a movie out of that outrageous viral video of a dude totally bailing on his family.

But thats easier stated than done when you have a film like “Downhill, ” a largely inferior American knockoff that's far less dynamic than the 2014 dark comedy it's based on. Not that this project didnt come together with some inspiration, starting with the first time that Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus have worked together. And then theres the writing/directing duo— Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, who previously made a family summer comedy to remember with “The Way Way Back, ” working with “Succession” writer Jesse Armstrong. With all of this talent on hand, its a let down to see them soften the edges in this depiction of a marriage dealing with disaster, and then try to make it familiar with some cheap comedy. Advertisement The premise for “Downhill” takes after Ruben Östlund s “ Force Majeure, ” which was about a family on a ski vacation that turned into a make-or-break point between a checked-out husband and worn-down wife. After scenes of getting acclimated to their adult Austrian resort and some time on the slopes, Billie (Julia-Louis Dreyfus) her husband Pete (Will Ferrell) and their two sons decide to grab lunch on an elevated patio. But their mountainous, picturesque background turns dangerous when controlled explosions set off an avalanche that careens right toward everyone on the patio. As the snow crashes down toward them, Pete chooses his cell phone and himself, darting away from the table as Billie holds onto her sons for dear life. When Pete returns, he orders soup as if nothing happened, as if he didnt just leave them behind. In one of the films few glimmers from Louis-Dreyfus performance, she tries to swallow the shock from such a betrayal, her trembling hand over her mouth before resuming lunch herself. The avalanche incident hangs over Billie and Pete for the rest of the trip, and tension mounts as Pete shows more of his cowardly, selfish true self. When Pete invites visiting work friend Zach ( Zach Woods) and his wife Rosie ( Zoe Chao) to come over for drinks (without giving Billie proper notice) Pete continues to deny the event, and tries to use ski boots as proof that he didnt run away. And when Billie and Pete go to an icy hotel figurehead ( Kristofer Hivju) to complain about the dangerous explosion, Pete fails to support her—especially when its revealed that he initially saw signs warning about the explosion, and just didnt think to say anything about it. Rash and Faxon try to make these scenes from a marriage pop with broadly drawn side characters, and depending on how you wish this movie would play out, its going to be too much or not enough. The trend seems to be horny Europeans, starting with Miranda Otto and her comically-forward hotel employee Charlotte; later, Louis-Dreyfus has a lesson with a comically-forward ski instructor named Guglielmo (Giulo Berruti. The familiarity of these characters can make “Downhill” even more dull, even if theyre meant to offer overt comic relief. A major void in the comedy and the drama of the story is in how “Downhill” uses its cast. For Ferrell, this is where a movie that took more advantage of his talents could have excelled, and instead it casts him so that you always see his man-child characters of the past. We dont get the sense that were watching one mans maturity set-back—even with a detail about his father passing away eight months ago—so much as that hes always been like this, and needs to learn one way or another that you cant coast through the family roles youve signed up for. And the comedy goes even further in highlighting his goofy quality, as his few overtly funny scenes prefer to have him acting like the most immature of the three males of the family, or falling over at a bar drunk like its Frank the Tank from “ Old School ” acting out against domestication. Its not even good Ferrell-style hijinks. Thankfully, Louis-Dreyfus is given richer material, as she goes from visibly disturbed to quietly disgusted. She experiences her own understanding that she deserves better than Petes inaction, and has some cutting bits of dialogue whenever Pete tries to deflect or deny what happened. And in one of the storys mildly amusing scenes, she asserts her autonomy during her time with tempting ski instructor Gugliemo. Her actions are surprising, and also make her character more interesting than her sourpuss husband. The scene leaves you wishing that if the story was going more for dysfunctional vacation comedy, that Louis-Dreyfus could have gotten the chance for similar laughs. “Downhill” watches Billie and Pete grow farther and farther apart, with Pete failing to admit a shame that Ferrell sometimes hints at with a boyish frown. Rash, Faxon, and Armstrong eventually bring their couple to a grand finale of sorts, and its not only stunningly abrupt but an undermining of its all-star talent's emotional potential.
